Becoming a Project Member in AB Projects

In AB Projects, project membership follows the connected Microsoft Teams channel. If you're in the channel, you become a project member automatically — you don't have to register yourself first.

Overview

A project is linked one-to-one with a Teams channel, and AB Projects keeps the project roster in sync with that channel's roster. When anyone in the channel opens the AB Projects tab, the roster is synced and everyone in the channel is added to the project as a Member — including people who haven't opened the tab themselves.

How you become a member

  • Be a member of the Teams channel the project is linked to. That's the main requirement.
  • The next time the channel roster syncs, you're added to the project as a Member, with your Microsoft identity registered so you can be assigned tasks and @mentioned in comments.
  • The sync runs when any channel member opens the tab and is throttled (about once per hour per project), so a newly added channel member is usually picked up within the hour rather than instantly.

What opening the tab does for you

You don't need to open the tab to be counted as a member, but you do open it to actually use AB Projects — see and work your tasks, comment, and switch views. Opening the tab also signs you in with Microsoft SSO and establishes your own session and language preference. If you're the first channel member to open the tab, your visit is also what triggers the roster sync that brings everyone else in.

If someone doesn't appear in the assignee or mention list

If a person's name isn't in the task Assignee or Mention picker, it's usually one of these:

  • The roster hasn't synced yet. They were recently added to the Teams channel and the next sync hasn't run. Have any channel member open the AB Projects tab to trigger a sync, then refresh.
  • They're not in the linked Teams channel. Membership follows the channel — add them to the channel and they'll be picked up on the next sync.
  • They were removed but are still in the channel. A removed member is re-added on the next sync if they're still in the Teams channel (see Adding or Removing Members).

Note: the Mention picker only lists members who have a Teams identity, since a mention is delivered as a Teams @mention.
